WhatsApp is testing a Snapchat Stories

3:07 AM
Less than two months since Facebook’s Instagram introduced Stories, a feature strikingly similar to Snapchat’s Stories, the social juggernaut is exploring the idea of adding this capability to WhatsApp as well.
WhatsApp is testing a Snapchat Stories-like feature on its instant messaging and voice calling app. The feature, dubbed “Status,” is hidden in the newest public beta build of WhatsApp’s Android and iOS clients, and you can give it a whirl starting today — provided you’re a beta tester, and have a jailbroken iPhone or a rooted Android phone.
Much like Stories, WhatsApp’s new Status feature is aimed at letting people share multiple updates in a day. Each of these instances of status has a lifespan of 24 hours, and can be shared with every contact on your WhatsApp, or with select people. The new feature is available under a “Status” tab on WhatsApp, which sits in the middle of existing “Chats” and “Calls” tabs.
The idea, from what we can gather, is to let people capture photos and videos and share it with their friends. WhatsApp is also letting users pick images and videos from their library, doodle on them and add text if they would like. Presumably, all these status updates will show up on the “Status” tab of friends.
It doesn’t seem like WhatsApp will be trickling down this new feature to its stable version of the app anytime soon, though. Even the beta testers of its apps are currently required to download a third-party app to enable the new Status feature on their phone. It will be interesting to see if it ever materializes.

The best ways to fix slow iOS 10 performance

7:15 PM
A few days after being launched, however, Apple users are complaining that iOS 10 is slowing their iPhone down. You are at the same situation but don't know the way to show? This article will help you

Reset Settings

The most easiest solution to slow iPhone performance is to reset all settings on your iPhone. This will not delete your apps, data or music, but you will likely need to re-setup WiFi connections and you will need to customize your iPhone settings again.

To start, go to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings -> Enter Your Passcode. Then, wait for the iPhone to restart.
Would you like to see interesting science facts?

Reset Your iPhone

This is the next level solution to completely reset your iPhone. If you are using an older iPhone and you have not ever started over from scratch since you bought it, this is a good time to try starting over. This will wipe all of your data from your iPhone and you will need to sync it back or to restore from a backup.

If you restore from a backup you may bring some problems back, but it is the easiest way to get all of your data on to your iPhone again after a reset.

Once you are done backing up, you can go to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings and Content -> Enter a Passcode.

This will restart your iPhone and wipe it clean. This will take some time and you cannot use your iPhone while it happens.

Go Back to iOS 9

You can still go back to iOS 9 for a short time. This normally will last a week or more so if you are concerned, now is the time to go back to iOS 9. You can only go back to iOS 9.3.5, but you can go back and wait for iOS 10.0.1 or iOS 10.1.

Amazing facts - Water fleas grow helmets and spines for battle

12:54 AM

Water fleas - animal facts prepare for battle by growing armor that's customized to specific enemies, new research finds.

Tiny Daphnia species develop impressive protective structures as they mature, including pointy tail spines and tough helmets. Now, researcher Linda Weiss of Ruhr-University Bochum in Germany and her colleagues have found the neurotransmitters that help water fleas customize their bodies in response to the chemical cues in their watery environments.

"Dopamine, in particular, appears to code neuronal signals into endocrine [hormone] signals," Weiss said in a statement.

Daphnia is a genus comprising many species of the tiny crustaceans known as water fleas. Most are less than 0.2 inches (5 millimeters) long, and look much like translucent versions of the land-based fleas that give them their nickname.

When juvenile Daphnia molt and develop a mature exoskeleton, they mold their bodies based on the chemicals they encounter in the water. The water fleas use appendages called antennules to detect scents and chemicals left by predators (fish, for example, or the upside-down swimming insects called backswimmers). They then develop armor defenses in response to the threats they expect to face. If you are unable to find the topic you are interested in please access here amazing facts of science to learn more

"These defenses are speculated to act like an anti-lock key system, which means that they somehow interfere with the predator's feeding apparatus," Weiss said. "Many freshwater fish can only eat small prey. So, for example, Daphnia lumholtzi grows head and tail spines to make eating them more difficult."

Weiss and her colleagues have found the intermediary steps that make this transformation occur. The antennules create brain signals when they detect chemical cues, which in turn cause the release of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopamine, in turn, cues the release of juvenile hormones that promote growth in particular body regions.

The same juvenile hormones promote growth in many other arthropods, Weiss said, which suggests that this developmental pathway is a widely shared way for crustaceans and insects to respond to environmental conditions.

Little Daphnia can also act as a canary in a coal mine for water quality, Weiss said. Understanding how water fleas change in response to chemical cues "will help in our understanding of the composition and population dynamics of freshwater ecosystems," Weiss said. "As freshwater is one of the most important resources on Earth, it is important to study the communities it holds."

Weiss was scheduled to present her findings, which have yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, Wednesday at the annual meeting for the Society for Experimental Biology in Brighton, EnglandCheck out games review

Less than a week out, Pokemon Go met widespread hacking

12:11 AM
Review journalPokemon Go is a game with a very different style of play, the player must move his feet and traveled to the different geographical areas. to be able to "catch" is Pokemon and level up, and can not sit still. To achieve this, the game requires players to enable your device's GPS to identify and track the location.

However, some players have taken advantage of the tips of the Android operating system in order to "fool" the GPS system and help bring the character to anywhere in the world. In particular, players can also apply this trick to fool the game server and catch Pokemon as normal, even not on the list of games supported (current new Pokemon Go only to allow players in the three countries are Australia, New Zealand and the United states to participate).

As for iOS, the fraud is even more sophisticated [full games review]Recently, a Cydia tweak appears and allows the player can touch up on the map of the game and immediately go to that point. At this point, the work of the players just hit, hit and catch Pokemon without leaving home. The tool also allows players to "hack speed" and arbitrary speeds. Even the author of this tweak will soon also say that additional features such as auto-station gym, automatically catch Pokemon and proceed to automate all phases of the game.

To ensure fairness to the game, Sforum will not go into detail how the names and activities of these tools. However, if the history of the game in terms of Ingress - a game with similar gameplay Niantic each development, a very high possibility that fraud accounts will be locked permanently. So, let's hope there will be moves Niantic in time to repel the game hacking victims. Update latest new games coming out to you can download and play animals games

Amazing facts - Have you given Pokémon Go full access to everything in your Google account?

8:06 PM
Games review, users who registered to play the game’s iOS app using Google accounts also gave the app permission to read emails and check out browser history

Gamers who have downloaded the Pokémon Go augmented reality game may have unwittingly handed over access to their emails, search histories and Google Drive data.

The security vulnerability appears to affect players who signed up to play the game using their Google account on Apple devices.

Typically app developers use this approach to make sign-up quicker and easier for players – it uses existing credentials stored on your phone so you don’t have to create yet another online account. Usually apps only require basic information such as your name, email, gender and location and this is explained clearly at the point of sign-up.

However, Niantic Labs – the company that developed Pokémon Go – did not have clear messaging about what data the app would have access to. Once signed up, many iPhone users were surprised to see that the app had “full access” their Google accounts, which allow apps to read and send email, access, edit and delete documents in Google Drive and Google Photos, and access browser and maps histories.

Adam Reeve, a software architect, described this as a “huge security risk”, though apps with full access can’t change the account password, delete their accounts or pay for things using any connected credit cards.

Full access is requested by very few apps, and should only be granted to apps that users fully trust.

There is nothing to suggest that Niantic Labs intentionally sought to gain access to users’ personal data, but the problem is a significant oversight. The company’s other augmented reality game, Ingress, only requests a user’s basic profile information.

“This is probably just the result of epic carelessness,” wrote Reeve, pointing out that he didn’t think the company was planning some “global personal information heist”.

“But I don’t know anything about Niantic’s security policies. I don’t know how well they will guard this awesome new power they’ve granted themselves, and frankly I don’t trust them at all,” Reeve added.
Fun facts: If it is fun and interesting, it belongs here cool animal facts!

Users can check whether Pokémon Go has access to their personal data inGoogle’s account settings. Users can choose to deny the app permission to access their Google accounts – although this means no longer playing the game.

It’s not the only security risk for Pokémon fans. Security researchers at Proofpoint have spotted a malicious version of the Pokémon Go Android app that has been infected with a remote access tool that gives attackers full control over the victim’s phone.

The malware hasn’t made its way on to Google’s app store yet, but it was discovered in an online file storage service, being marketed to unsuspecting users as the genuine game. Because the game hasn’t been rolled out globally yet, some impatient users have been downloading Pokémon Go from third parties, running the risk of infecting their devices with the unofficial software.

“Rogue apps can be hard to differentiate from real apps. It’s a really scary proposition and it’s getting progressively worse,” said Stephen McCarney, of the security company Arxan Technologies.

Domingo Guerra, founder of mobile app security company Appthority, agrees.

“It seems to have been done by mistake,” he said, warning users to reconsider downloading the game until the problem has been fixed. “Once you grant access you never know what a third party can do with your account,” he said.

Having access to your email account could allow a malicious attacker to change passwords on all sorts of services including online banking, he warned.

“I’m pretty sure it’s going to get fixed pretty quickly, but it’s not worth the risk.

A robot killed the Dallas gunman

2:20 AM
There isn't new about a dangerous suspect dying at the hands of police.
If you are unable to find the topic you are interested in please access amazing science facts

But Thursday night in Dallas, the situation played out with a twist. Micah Johnson, believed to have fatally shot 5 police officers, was killed by an explosive device that a robot delivered.

Two executives at robotic companies told this is the first time a police robot has been involved in a civilian's death.

"We saw no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a device on its extension for it to detonate where the suspect was," Dallas police chief David Brown said at a news conference Friday morning. "Other options would have exposed our officers to grave danger."

It's unclear exactly what type of robot was used in the suspect's death. Robots are common inside police departments, and generally used to disable explosive devices or disorient and incapacitate suspects that are barricaded. To do this, the robot generally carries a flashbang, a device that emits a bright light and loud sound. Sometimes these robots are used to place an explosive near a bomb in order to disarm it via explosion.

Northrop Grumman Remotec, which calls itself the largest providers of robots to first responders, declined to comment and referred all questions to the Dallas police department.

The robot was likely expensive, with a price tag of around $100,000, according to Endeavor Robotics chief executive Sean Bielat.

Endeavor Robotics sells its robots to agencies in the greater Dallas area, but wasn't sure if its robot was used in Thursday's incident.

These types of ground robots do not operate autonomously, but are under the control of a human operator. Similar models are used overseas to disable explosive devices in places such as Iraq. Using one to kill a suspect in the U.S. is unheard of.
By the way, check out cat facts for kids to explore science interesting facts about cat species. Everything you wanted to know

"I think this is an anomaly," said Brian Hart, the president of Black-I Robotics, which makes ground robots for the government. He doesn't foresee a new trend of police using robots to kill suspects.

It's unclear if the Dallas robot was present at the time of the explosion, or left the explosive device and retreated to safety so it wouldn't be harmed as well.

Bielat's ground robots, which are designed for law enforcement, aren't designed to be used for lethal purposes. But that doesn't stop them from being used that way.

"If the first responders who were there thought this was the most appropriate way to use it, it must have been the most extreme situation," Bielat said. "It's tragic that this situation ended this way, but it was in respond to an even greater tragedy."

Bielat said using robots in police encounters can actually improve safety and reduce deaths.

"You can't shoot second if you're a person and you're dealing with somebody's who is armed," Bielat said. "But if you're a robot you absolutely can."

Will the Galaxy Note 7 run Android Nougat?

2:49 AM

As Samsung gears up for the release of its Galaxy Note 7 (or is that the Note 6?) phablet, the rumours and reports are starting to mount up. Review journal told that

We already expect the new handset to arrive with a 4K 6-inch display, 256GB storage, and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 823 chipset, or an Exynos 8893 depending on where you live.

And recent 'leaks' have revealed an array of lenses on the front of the Note 7 which seems to indicate the device will come with an iris scanner.

Now, more Note 7 news has surfaced online after the latest Geekbench benchmarking tests showed a version of the device running Android 7.0 Nougat.

The revelation seems to suggest that Samsung's upcoming phablet will run the latest version of Google's mobile OS out of the box, although a version of the Note 7 running Android Marshmallow was also spotted going through the same test in June.

Surprisingly, the latest test yielded low scores, with the SM-N930F (a model number previously associated with the Note 7) model achieving 909 in the single-core stakes and 3,768 in the multi-core test.

However, this latest model was using an Exynos 7420 chipset alongside 3GB of RAM, as opposed to the rumoured Snapdragon 823 and 6GB of RAM we've been hearing about – which explains the low scores.

Interestingly, the Marshmallow model tested in June included an Exynos 8890 and 4GB of RAM, resulting in scores of 2,394 and 7,347 in the single-core and multi-core tests respectively.

While the latest Geekbench scores don't necessarily confirm Nougat as the standard OS for the Note 7, it's now a definite possibility.

Samsung hasn't commented on the latest Geekbench results, and is expected to officially unveil the Note 7 at a dedicated event on August 2.

Review journal - 5 ways to take charge of the iOS Home button

2:14 AM
Slow down the double-click speed on your iPhone or iPad's Home button, keep the Home key from accessing Siri from the lock screen, turn on triple-click shortcuts, and more.

Review journal the Home button on your iPhone and iPad will get a new job with arrival of iOS 10: It’ll unlock your handset, replacing the old “Slide to Unlock” gesture. But you don’t have to wait until fall to change the Home key’s behavior.

Beyond its standard chores of taking you back to the home screen and letting you quickly switch between apps, the Home key can also act as a shortcut to some of iOS’s handiest features, such as zooming the display and reversing screen colors. You can also change the speed at which you need to double-click the Home key, or decide whether the Home button can access Siri and Apple Pay from the lock screen. Last but not least, you can choose whether double-touching the Home key engages iOS’s (potentially annoying) “Reachability” feature.
Triple-click for accessibility shortcuts

iOS has long had a series of interesting accessibility features up its sleeves. VoiceOver, for example, will read aloud aloud anything on the screen, while Zoom lets you zoom in or out on the display by pinching the screen. Grayscale renders all the colors on the display in shades of gray, while Invert Colors reverses all the colors on the screen, making for a de facto “dark mode” while browsing in Safari. There’s also Assistive Touch and Switch Control, a pair of features for those who need help tapping and swiping a touchscreen.
There’s a handy iOS setting that’ll let you access a slew of accessibility features with a triple-click of the Home button.

All those accessibility options are (somewhat inaccessibly) hidden behind a few layers of menus, but there’s a handy setting that’ll let you get there with a triple-click of the Home button.

Tap Settings > General > Accessibility, then scroll all the way down and tap Accessibility Shortcut. Next go ahead and tap the accessibility features you use the most—you can tap one, all, or just a few of them.

Now, go back to the home screen and triple-click the Home button. If you selected more than one accessibility shortcut, a pop-up listing all your selected shortcuts will appear; just tap the one you want. If you only selected one shortcut, that accessibility feature will immediately switch on. Triple-click the Home button again to turn off the accessibility option or to return to the shortcut menu.
Change the double-click speed

Double-clicking your iPhone or iPad’s Home key can be trickier than it sounds. If you aren’t fast enough with your Home key double-clicks (or triple-clicks), you’ll simply wind up back at the home screen rather than, say, switching apps or jumping to your accessibility shortcuts.

If you don’t have the split-second timing needed to double-click the Home button, there’s a setting that’ll help slow the pace a bit.
By the way, check out cat facts for kids to explore science interesting facts about cat species. Everything you wanted to know
Tap Settings > General > Accessibility > Home Button, then pick a speed: Default (the fastest), Slow, or Slowest.

Each of the three options will blink repeatedly as you tap them, giving you an idea of how fast you’ll have to double-click. Don’t feel bad if you opt for the Slowest setting; that’s what I did.
Turn off Reachability

Older iPhone models look puny compared to the jumbo-sized iPhone 6 and 6 Plus versions, but the smaller 3.5- and 4-inch iPhone screens have one advantage over their bigger brothers: You can access the entire thing with your thumb while holding the device in one hand.

That’s why the bigger iPhone handsets (the iPhone 6 and later, except the iPhone SE) got Reachability, a feature that scoots the entire screen down to about the midpoint of the display, making it easier to reach the top of the interface with your thumb. You can activate Reachability by double-tapping, but not pressing, the Home button.

Now, Reachability is a considerate feature for those who use their iPhones with only one hand, but it’s also easy to activate Reachability by mistake. Luckily, there’s an easy way to disable Reachability if it’s more trouble than it’s worth. Tap Settings > General > Accessibility, then switch off the Reachability setting.
Disable Apple Pay access from the lock screen

What’s the point of Apple Pay if it isn’t easier to get to than your wallet? Good question, and that’s probably why you can use the Home button as an Apple Pay shortcut.

From your iPhone or iPad lock screen, you can simply double-click the Home button to make your Apple Pay debit and credit cards appear.

It’s a nifty feature for those who use Apple Pay all the time, but it can get annoying if you’re not an Apple Pay fan. I tired of Apple Pay after my saved cards were repeatedly declined in New York City yellow cabs, and adding insult to injury, I kept activating Apple Pay by accident from my iPhone’s lock screen.

As with Reachability, you can keep Apple Pay stowed by tweaking a simple setting. TapSettings > Wallet & Apple Pay, then turn off the Double-Click Home Button setting. Once that’s done, your Apple Pay cards will stay hidden unless you specifically launch the Wallet app or hold your iPhone next to an NFC payment terminal.
Summon Siri from the lock screen—or not

Helpful though she can be, Siri has a bad habit of appearing on my iPhone screen when I need her the least. Maybe something’s up with the Home button on my iPhone 6, but Siri frequently pops up on my screen when I’m unlocking my iPhone, or when I’m trying to double-click.

You can’t change the default method of summoning Siri—pressing and holding the Home key—but you can keep her from appearing on your iPhone or iPad’s lock screen.

Tap Settings > Touch ID & Passcode, then switch off the Siri option under the Allow Access When Locked setting.

Hot fact of life - Eplore about Jupiter! NASA Spacecraft Arrives at Giant Planet

9:36 PM
This artist's rendering provided by NASA and JPL-Caltech shows the Juno spacecraft above the planet Jupiter. Five years after its launch from Earth, Juno is scheduled to go into orbit around the gas giant on Monday, July 4, 2016.

Braving intense radiation, fact of life a NASA spacecraft reached Jupiter on Monday after a five-year voyage to begin exploring the king of the planets.

Ground controllers at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Lockheed Martin erupted in applause when the solar-powered Juno spacecraft beamed home news that it was circling Jupiter's poles.

The arrival at Jupiter was dramatic. As Juno approached its target, it fired its rocket engine to slow itself down and gently slipped into orbit. Because of the communication time lag between Jupiter and Earth, Juno was on autopilot when it executed the daring move.

"Juno, welcome to Jupiter," said mission control commentator Jennifer Delavan of Lockheed Martin, which built Juno.

The spacecraft's camera and other instruments were switched off for arrival, so there won't be any pictures at the moment it reaches its destination. Hours before the encounter, NASA released a series of images taken last week during the approach, showing Jupiter glowing yellow in the distance, circled by its four inner moons.

Scientists have promised close-up views of the planet when Juno skims the cloud tops during the 20-month, $1.1 billion mission.

The fifth rock from the sun and the heftiest planet in the solar system, Jupiter is what's known as a gas giant — a ball of hydrogen and helium — unlike rocky Earth and Mars.

With its billowy clouds and colorful stripes, Jupiter is an extreme world that likely formed first, shortly after the sun. Unlocking its history may hold clues to understanding how Earth and the rest of the solar system developed.

Named after Jupiter's cloud-piercing wife in Roman mythology, Juno is only the second mission designed to spend time at Jupiter.

Galileo, launched in 1989, circled Jupiter for nearly a decade, beaming back splendid views of the planet and its numerous moons. It uncovered signs of an ocean beneath the icy surface of the moon Europa, considered a top target in the search for life outside Earth.

Juno's mission: To peer through Jupiter's cloud-socked atmosphere and map the interior from a unique vantage point above the poles. Among the lingering questions: How much water exists? Is there a solid core? Why are Jupiter's southern and northern lights the brightest in the solar system?

"What Juno's about is looking beneath that surface," Juno chief scientist Scott Bolton said before the arrival. "We've got to go down and look at what's inside, see how it's built, how deep these features go, learn about its real secrets."

There's also the mystery of its Great Red Spot. Recent observations by the Hubble Space Telescope revealed the centuries-old monster storm in Jupiter's atmosphere is shrinking.

The trek to Jupiter, spanning nearly five years and 1.8 billion miles (2.8 billion kilometers), took Juno on a tour of the inner solar system followed by a swing past Earth that catapulted it beyond the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Along the way, Juno became the first spacecraft to cruise that far out powered by the sun, beating Europe's comet-chasing Rosetta spacecraft. A trio of massive solar wings sticks out from Juno like blades from a windmill, generating 500 watts of power to run its nine instruments. Check out related in science and technology at here reviews

In the coming days, Juno will turn its instruments back on, but the real work won't begin until late August when the spacecraft swings in closer. Plans called for Juno to swoop within 3,000 miles (5,000 kilometers) of Jupiter's clouds — closer than previous missions — to map the planet's gravity and magnetic fields in order to learn about the interior makeup.

Juno is an armored spacecraft — its computer and electronics are locked in a titanium vault to shield them from harmful radiation. Even so, Juno is expected to get blasted with radiation equal to more than 100 million dental X-rays during the mission.

Like Galileo before it, Juno meets its demise in 2018 when it deliberately dives into Jupiter's atmosphere and disintegrates — a necessary sacrifice to prevent any chance of accidentally crashing into the planet's potentially habitable moons.

WHAT IS THE IPHONE 5C?

The iPhone 5C is a cheaper alternative to the iPhone 5S and marks the first time that Apple has changed its mobile line-up. Traditionally, if you were looking for a cheaper iPhone you would have to step back in the series to an older handset, this time it has released two phones at once.

The iPhone is a notoriously expensive phone regardless of which version you buy, and the iPhone 5C has not broken the mould in this sense. At launch it commanded a price tag of £469, but its price has since been slashed to under £300/ $450. You can currently get your hands on the 8GB version from Best Buy for as little as $300. It actually costs roughly the same as the iPhone 5, a phone it shares a lot of its internals with.

The iPhone 5C has ditched the metal body that has been used in the iPhone 5S and Apple’s latest flagships, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, and instead opted for a bright, plastic body. Does it bring more than just this superficial change to the table, though?

IPHONE 5C – DESIGN

The iPhone 5C is a unibody phone, which means you have no access to the battery or the insides unless you’re willing to fully take it apart.

At a glance, you could be forgiven for mistaking the iPhone 5C for a member of the Nokia Lumia family. It takes design inspiration from Nokia’s range, which finally proved that a plastic phone doesn’t have to feel cheap.

The iPhone 5C is a touch wider and 30g heavier than the iPhone 5S so feels a little weightier in the hand. This isn’t really an area of complaint though. At 9mm thick and just 132g it is still a very lean phone.

You have a choice of five colours for the iPhone 5C – pink, blue, yellow, green and white. They’re much more fun to look at than the slightly austere iPhone 5S, but the colours are not dazzlingly bright, they’re more pastel-looking. They’re a little more muted than the Nokia Lumia phones.

The iPhone 5C feels as immaculately well-made, which you would expect from Apple – there are no gaps or inconsistencies in the border between the plastic back and glass front, no flexing of the body. But glossy plastic was never going to feel as impressive as the aluminium rear of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S.

We also found that the plastic nano SIM slot on the phone’s right edge tends to get a little mucky, spoiling the otherwise impressive consistency of the phone’s colouring – the buttons and mute switch are all colour-matched to the rear.

The iPhone 5C has a strong look, but we’re not as impressed by the official Apple iPhone 5C case. It’s a felt-lined rubbery case with cut-out dots on the rear. Match the colours well and you’ll get a funky look, but the way the dots reveal part of the iPhone logo looks clumsy and the rubbery finish attracts dust and fluff to the plastic body within minutes. The concept is decent, but the execution falls short of the standard set by the phone itself. Full reviews

The placement of the iPhone 5C’s buttons and switches are more-or-less identical to those of the iPhone 5. A mute switch sits on the left edge, alongside the volume buttons, while a power button lives up top. It’s a design that simply works on a phone this size, with every button easily accessible without having to use two hands. This is one of the main benefits of a smaller phone like this – it’s a much less intimidating presence than any high-end Android phone.

If you’re upgrading from a pre-iPhone 5 Apple phone, though, there are some new-ish things to get used to. The iPhone 5C uses a tiny nano SIM, and the Lightning port introduced by the iPhone 5. The port may be a consideration if you have a swanky high-end speaker dock that won’t fit an iPhone 5C – although Apple does offer an adapter for the rather princely sum of £25.

Unfortunately the iPhone 5C misses out on what’s probably the biggest hardware innovation of the iPhone 5S – the Touch ID fingerprint scanner. This lets you secure your phone against the fingers of any more mischievous friends without using a passcode. It’s a genuinely useful feature, but here you’ll either have to use the passcode or go without that extra layer of protection.

IPHONE 5C – SCREEN

Fact of life, Just like the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S, the iPhone 5C has a 4-inch screen. It’s smaller than every Android phone at the price, but quality-wise it’s excellent.

Side-by-side we couldn’t tell any big differences between this display and the iPhone 5S’s. They use exactly the same type of panel. It’s a top-quality IPS panel that offers superb colour reproduction, excellent contrast and startling peak brightness.

The iPhone 5C uses a 1,136 x 640 pixel screen. The resulting 326ppi pixel density is the same pixel pitch that saw the introduction of the term ‘Retina’ display – meaning so sharp you can’t see the pixels.

Other phones have since far outstripped this pixel density. The HTC One M8 has a 441ppi screen. However, if anyone tells you it’s a reason to buy that phone over the iPhone 5C, they’re wrong. At normal viewing distances there’s little benefit in higher pixel density IPS screens than this. You can only tell much of a difference if you get your eyeballs right up close to the screen – not a good look on the train, and no good for your eyes.

Of course, screen size is an absolutely valid consideration. What the iPhone 5C gains in practicality – it’s so easy to grasp and use one-handed – it loses in other areas. A large screen like the LG G3’s or Samsung Galaxy S5’s offers a better canvas for websites (especially non-mobile ones) and is far, far better as a display for watching videos.

The same could be said for games but, as we’ll cover later, this is made up for by the iPhone’s unbeatable game library.

Newly discovered helium deposit is a 'game changer'

12:06 AM

Reviews, What scientists are calling a "game changer" for society has been discovered deep in Tanzania's Rift Valley: a massive helium gas field with enough of the precious commodity to fill more than 1.2 million MRI scanners, Phys.org reports.

Besides the sheer amount of gas, the discovery is notable because it appears to be the first time that stores of helium have been purposely found (they're usually stumbled upon during oil and gas drilling).

And the find, which will be presented Tuesday by Durham University PhD student Diveena Danabalan at a Japanese geochemistry conference, could help restock nearly depleted stockpiles.

Researchers figure there's about 54 billion cubic feet of helium in just one section of the valley. To put that in context, the Federal Helium Reserve in Texas, which supplies more than 40% of domestic helium needs and contains about 30% of the world's total helium supply, right now holds about 24.2 billion cubic feet, perLive Science, plant facts

"It could be substantially larger," researcher Jon Gluyas says. "This is a globally significant discovery." The scientists from Durham, working with Oxford University counterparts, used a new method of gas exploration to track down the Rift Valley helium, studying volcanic activity in the region, as well as how intense heat from that activity works to release helium trapped in the Earth's crust, and then pinpointing which sites would likely prove to be plum drilling sites, much like those looking for oil would do.

The problem arises when the helium-storing rocks are too close to the volcanoes—meaning the helium will be mixed in with and diluted by volcanic gases—so now the researchers' next goal is to find the sweet spot (or, as Danabalan puts it, the "Goldilocks zone") "where the balance between helium release and volcanic dilution is 'just right.'" (Danabalan has been on the hunt for helium for some time.)

Reviews about rumor: Google-branded phone due in 2016

9:31 PM
The Google internet homepage is displayed on a product at a store in London, Britain January 23, 2016.
Fact of life, though CEO Sundar Pichai says otherwise, rumors suggest Google is prepping its own branded smartphone.

According to The Telegraph, Google is in discussions with mobile operators about releasing a handset later this year. But earlier this month, Pichai said that while his company may request design changes to Nexus phones and tablets, it will continue relying on partners to manufacture devices.

Google did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment. Reviews, currently, it focuses on software, producing the popular Android operating system but handing off production of Nexus devices to partners like LG and Huawei.

Details remain foggy, but as Engadget points out, the Pixel C tablet could offer a glimpse of what a Google smartphone might be like. The high-end piece of hardware—available in 32GB for $499 or 64GB for $599—earned a three-out-of-five rating from PCMag's Sascha Segan, who called the slate "extremely buggy" with dull cameras.

The Web giant, meanwhile, is busy readying its modular smartphone, Project Ara, for distribution later this year. A developer edition will start shipping in the fall as a 5.3-inch Android device with most of its key technology house in the frame, with room for up to six additional modules.
